1946-1947 Hallicrafters S-38A:
|
An early post-war 5-tube SW receiver with a very compact cabinet (330 x 170 x 195 mm / 13 x 6.7 x 7.7 inches) designed by Raymond Loewy -- he would design several more radio cabinets for Hallicrafters over the following few years (S-40A, SX-42). The S-38A has continuous coverage over four bands from 550 kHz to 31 MHz (550-1650 kHz, 1.7-5.1 MHz, 5-14.5 MHz, 13-31 MHz). It has an internal speaker, a BFO for CW reception, a receive/standby switch for use with a ham transmitter, and no S-meter. The tuning dial and band spread dial are really basic. Regardless, I think most people would agree that the S-38 is a truly classic and memorable shortwave receiver. |
