Like most radio guys, I got started in childhood: shortwave radio listening in the late '60s, then amateur radio in the early '70s, then I lost interest for about 12 years…

In 1986 I started collecting old radios – first tube tabletop sets, then transistor radios. I’ve had about a thousand radios pass through my collection, and right now I have about 250 -– A few years ago I tried to scale it down to 100 of my absolute favorites, but there were just too many absolute favorites, and since then I've realized that even 250 isn't enough favorites, and so my collection is growing again. The majority of the radios shown here are still in my current collection, but it also shows many radios I've sold or traded away over the years since first making this site.

I lived and worked in the Boston area for about twenty-five years before moving in 2004 to Bratislava, Slovakia (it’s in Central Europe) with my wife Milena. We both teach ESL here part-time, and I do English language editing as well. We have an American Cocker Spaniel, Emil, almost three years old now, who is the joy of our lives.

Ham radio operators may find me on the air from time to time as OM/WB8IPB. My rig is a Kenwood TS-940S working a multiband dipole about 70 feet above-ground.

About This Site:

I started this site around 1998 – I named it, "The M31 Galaxy of Transistor Radios" because it’s part of a larger site of mine, GalaxyM31.com, which covers other interests of mine as well. "M31" is the Messier Catalog designation for the Andromeda galaxy, my favorite object in the night sky (see What the Heck IS M31? ) And you may have noticed that the background image on the transistor home page is of the Pleiades, not the Andromeda galaxy – the Pleiades make a much better background image than does the Andromeda galaxy (seeAbout the Images ).

Anyway, I built this site in hopes of at least suggesting a partial picture of transistor radio history, design, and marketing – I have my own collecting preferences, but I feel it’s important to share as much as I can about the hobby.
