c.1961 Sanyo 6C-18
Coat pocket radio, thermoplastic cabinet
5 7/8 x 3 x 1 3/4 inches / 150 x 75 x 45 mm
Six transistors (Sanyo), one standard 9-volt battery
Manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Japan
This is a not-often-found Sanyo that's slightly different from the Sanyo 6C-11 and Sanyo's 6C-11 look-alike Channel Master 6506.
I think this 6C-18 comes later than the 6C-11 or even the Channel Master 6506: Sanyo seemed to name its models in progression, with lower model numbers indicating earlier production dates, and this 6C-18 is obviously well above the 6C-11.
Also, the transistors used here are made by Sanyo itself, rather than the Toshiba transistors found in the 6C-11 and Channel Master 6506, indicating that this model was produced after Sanyo had begun making its own transistors and had stopped using transistors from other manufacturers (Sony and Toshiba). I'm not sure when the transistion came, but a 1960-marketed/1959-produced Sanyo 7S-P5 short wave shirt pocket radio still employed Toshiba transistors -- so I'm calling this Sanyo 6C-18 a c.1961 radio.
This 6C-18 has a tuning dial with script numerals, a textured grille that's not as nice as the Channel Master's grille, and its cloisonne badge on the grill says "Sanyo" rather than "6TR" -- and there are a number of other small differences as well.
