c.1965 Toshiba Viscount 833
Portable radio, thermoplastic cabinet
8 1/2 x 4 3/4 x 1 7/8 / 216 x 121 x 48 mm
3-band MW/SW, eight transistors (Toshiba), four 1.5v "C" cells
Manufactured by Toshiba, Kawasaki, Japan
Distributed by Consolidated S.M. Corp.
Made by Toshiba, same cabinet as the 9-transistor Toshiba 9L-460S, this Viscount's three bands are named: Medium Wave, a 1.5--4.5 MHz Marine Band covering at the time ship-to-shore communications, three shortwave broadcast bands, and two amateur radio bands among other things; and a 6--18 MHz Short Wave Band that covers three separate shortwave broadcast bands and several amateur radio bands. With such squeezed tuning, minimal band spread tuning and no selectivity control, this can't be considered a "real" shortwave receiver, but you certainly could pick up a whole bunch of shortwave stations on it at the time.
A really handsome little portable shortwave radio: The giant tuning area is all reverse-painted plastic in four colors: gold, black, red and white. There's a push button for a dial light, a battery/signal strength meter, and typically pretty pointless slide switches controlling RF attenuation and AF tone.
